Why you can’t own a Starbucks Franchise in India?

As we all know, India has been a major tea-consuming country for a long time. However, over the past two decades, the increasing urbanization and disposable income among youth have led to a rapid rise in coffee culture in India.

This growth has led to a boom in the coffee shop business, and there are already many coffee shop brands in the market.

Among such brands, the most popular brand known to all of us is Starbucks.

Starbucks Franchise

Founded in 1971 and headquartered in Seattle, Washington, Starbucks is the world’s largest coffee shop chain with more than 36 thousand outlets in 80+ countries around the world.

They offer a wide variety of hot and cold coffee drinks, as well as tea, smoothies, and other beverages. The company also sells food items, such as pastries, sandwiches, and salads.

Starbucks in India

Starbucks entered the Indian market in October 2012 through a 50-50 joint venture with Tata Consumer Products Limited, opening its first store in Mumbai’s Elphinstone Building on October 19th, 2012.

Currently, Starbucks operates over 400 stores across 60 cities in India.

The company plans to operate 1,000 stores in India by 2028.

While offering its core coffee beverages and food items in India, Starbucks also caters to local tastes and preferences.

For example, it provides India-specific beverages like filter coffee and masala chai. It also offers vegetarian and vegan options.

Why Can’t own a Starbuck Franchise?

Unfortunately, Tata Starbucks does not offer franchise licenses in India. Tata Starbucks Pvt. Ltd. has sole and exclusive rights to own and operate Tata Starbucks Restaurants in India and does not offer any franchisees.

In India, the company operates under a joint venture model with Tata Sons, which handles store operations and expansion for Tata Starbucks.

This means individual franchise ownership of a Starbucks store in India is not currently possible.

Misinformation about Starbucks Franchise Opportunities

Due to misinformation available on the internet about Starbucks franchises, Tata Starbucks recently filed a lawsuit against certain websites that were collecting information from the general public for Starbucks franchise opportunities, which are unavailable in India.

The Delhi High Court directed Google LLC to “immediately suspend” within a week the URLs of Google Forms offering invitations to the public for Starbucks franchises.

If you are interested in the coffee shop business, you can contact other brands that offer franchise opportunities.

However, if you already have experience in this type of business, instead of going with another brand, you can open your own outlet and start your own brand.

When you have your own outlet, you do not need to pay any royalty or commission, and you can operate your outlet as you wish.
